- Waikīkī was the capital of the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi from 1795 to 1796 — one year, and then the court moved on. What is left is six beaches in a row: Kahanamoku, Fort DeRussy, Gray's, Kūhiō, Waikīkī and Queen's. The sand on them is almost entirely man-made. Living here means the world walks past your door before you have had coffee, and Kapiʻolani Park at the Diamond Head end is where that stops. source
