  • Lower Nuʻuanu is the bottom of the valley, around Nuʻuanu Avenue and Judd Street, where the city stops being downtown and starts climbing. Mauna ʻAla, the Royal Mausoleum of Hawaiʻi, is on Nuʻuanu Avenue — roughly three acres, a coral-block Gothic Revival building designed by Theodore Heuck, first used for the funeral of Kamehameha IV on 3 February 1864 — and most of the monarchs of the Kingdom are buried there. The valley funnels the trade winds down toward downtown, which is why it runs cooler and wetter than the harbor flats a mile below. The Pali Highway opened through the tunnels in 1958 and changed the valley more than anything since. source
