• Mākaha means fierce, and it is the last of the leeward towns: go north from here and the development simply stops — no town, no gas station, no restaurant, just coast. The town is known above all for its waves and for its place in surfing history. Mākaha Beach Park is also a nesting beach for several species of sea turtle. Up the valley, Kāneʻāki Heiau is the most thoroughly restored heiau in Hawaiʻi — excavated by Bishop Museum archaeologists in 1970, it began as a 15th-century agricultural temple to Lono.
