- In Hawaiian, kāne ʻohe means bamboo man — from an old story in which a woman likened her husband's cruelty to the cutting edge of a bamboo knife. Kāneʻohe is a census place in the Koʻolaupoko District on the windward side, sitting on the largest sheltered bay in the main Hawaiian Islands. The Koʻolau wall rises directly behind it, which is the first thing anybody notices and the reason the light here is never the same twice. source
