• Kailua means two seas, or two currents — a contraction of kai and ʻelua — named either for the two old fishponds in the district, Kawainui and Kaʻelepulu, or for the two currents that run through the bay. It is twelve miles from Honolulu over the Nuʻuanu Pali, and the commercial district runs along Kailua Road about five minutes inland from Kailua Beach Park. Three markets run every week: People's Open Market on Thursday mornings at Kailua District Park, the Hawaii Farm Bureau market on Thursday evenings at the Town Center garage, and the Lōkahi market on Sundays on Uluniu Street.
