• Hawaiians call it Lēʻahi — most likely lae, a browridge or promontory, plus ʻahi, tuna, because the ridgeline has the shape of a tuna's dorsal fin. The English name came from 19th-century British sailors who took the calcite crystals on the beach below for diamonds. The neighborhood is the flank between the crater and the sea, which is why the streets are short and the lots are old. source
